The local congregation does own the property when it's paid off. This other BS gets repeated over and over again and it's simply not true. I've been involved in buying, building and selling several kingdom halls and I don't know where this comes from, other than wishful thinking.

Farkel, certainly I accept empirical data if it's based on some significant quantity of objective observation. However, the referenced anecdotes on this and similar sites do not, in my opinion, meet that standard. There is as much lack of objectivity here as there is in the repeated reference one hears at the meetings to Witnesses being "the happiest people on the Earth." Now, if you had a randomly selected sample of 1,000 Witnesses from the general Witness population and they were observed over whatever period was necessary, say six months, by three psychiatrists who could demonstrate that they were indeed objective and operating independently, and even two of them reached the conclusion that there was more mental illness in Witnesses than in the rest of the general population, then I'd accept that conclusion without hesitation.
Actually, that's a rather good idea. I wonder if we could get someone to fund it? You'd have to do some serious work on the selection criteria but I think you could get there in the end.

by confusedjw inwhat are people's experiences here of jw's who let their kids play sports and the consequences for them?.

It's not as unheard of as it used to be. I've known JW kids that played high school football, basketball, soccer, golf, tennis and some that were in track. I've also known kids in band and orchestra, and a few that were in plays and that kind of thing. Not a lot, but some.

Anecdotes are virtually meaningless in this context. There is no rigor in the information imparted by these 'discussions' and 'personal experiences'. They are just as meaningful as the 'experiences' cited at the weekly Service Meeting.

To reinforce Farkel's comment, Bergman is not very credible. His degree has nothing to do with psychology, psychiatry, sociology or medicine so he's talking out of his hat. He also hasn't done very well in the "expert witness" business.

A slave is obedient even to a cruel master?...
by cyber-sista injust recently sister x from the kh where i recently attended had another meeting with the elders there to try and help she and brother x with their abusive marital relationship.
they are constantly meeting with the elders and have done so for many years over this and everything other decision they need to make in their lives.
they are very "elder dependent" but their lives never seem to improve and in fact it just seems to go from bad to worse.

I've never heard that scripture applied to wives, and I suspect it never has been applied to wives in the literature. This is some nut case elder body that doesn't know what they're doing. I also agree with willy, some people just can't be helped, not even by professional couselors, unless the help is to just go ahead and get divorced. That's the only answer in some cases. In this particular case, since physical abuse is involved, she should call the police.

Flowers for Algernon - anyone ever read it?
by Sunnygal41 ini remember this from school............it was one of those short stories that were required reading.........i remember being totally swept away by it and deeply saddened by the ending.. .
daniel keyes wrote little sf but is highly regarded for one classic, flowers for algernon.
as a 1959 novella it won a hugo award; the 1966 novel-length expansion won a nebula.

Loved the story, always struggled with the question of whether the relatively short period of being intelligent would be worth it.
